What exactly is French Terry fabric?

In most cases, this material consists of Cotton or a mixture of cotton and synthetic fiber (e.g. polyester). To create a certain stretch, a small percentage of spandex is often incorporated.

Similar to Jersey French terry fabric is knitted or warp-knitted, not woven. Therefore, it belongs to the so-called knitted fabric. Unlike other sweat fabrics, French Terry is roughened on the inside, but has a typical jersey loop look, which was roughened in a further step, creating a palpably soft inside.

What are the characteristics of French Terry fabrics?

Most French Terry fabrics are bi-elastic. This allows you to cut them against the grain. In addition, this fabric:

  • soft, grippy and cuddly
  • slightly thicker and heavier falling than jersey
  • easy to process
  • moisture regulating
  • low-maintenance

What should I pay attention to when caring for French Terry?

In terms of care, these fabrics are not very demanding. However, you should note the following:

  • Washing: Since it is cotton or blended fabric, you can easily machine wash the jersey-like fabric at 30°C on the regular cycle. Make sure that the detergent does not contain bleach. This could remove the color from the fabric and make it fade.
  • Drying: You should refrain from drying in the tumble dryer.
  • Ironing: Like other stretch fabrics, French Terry does not necessarily need to be ironed, as it will pull itself into shape when worn. However, ironing is generally possible on level two/three.

What to consider when sewing French Terry?

Compared to jersey fabrics, French Terry tends to curl up less when sewing. Therefore, the fabric is very suitable for sewing beginners. A jersey or stretch needle is recommended. So that the seams do not tear later, you should choose an elastic stitch.
