What are quilting fabrics?

Quilted fabrics are two- to three-ply multi-textiles. They consist of at least one upper fabric and one lower fabric, which are joined together by a quilting seam. Two-layer fabrics have a thermally bonded nonwoven layer, which gives them heat-insulating properties. In three-layer fabrics, a warming filling material is inserted between the outer layers, for example absorbent cotton, wool or down.

Classic face materials for quilting fabrics are poplin, gabardine, Jersey, natural silk and lighter Loden. If you want to be particularly flexible in the realization of your sewing projects, it is recommended to buy a doubleface quilting fabric, where both sides can be used as outer fabric.

What are the characteristics of quilting fabric?

All quilting fabrics offer warming and heat-insulating properties, making them ideal materials for fall and winter clothing. Due to their special structure, they are breathable, hardly susceptible to running stitches and cannot become statically charged. In addition, quilted fabric is easy to process and offers a unique look with its quilting patterns.

  • not statically chargeable,
  • easy to process.

Quilted fabric is not inherently water repellent. However, by using a waterproofing spray, you can easily give it water-repellent properties.
